The heritage of tramways in Calcutta, now Kolkata, represents a pioneering chapter in India’s urban transport history, beginning with horse-drawn trams in 1873.
Origins
Calcutta’s first horse-drawn tram service launched on February 24, 1873, covering 2.4 miles from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat via Bowbazar and Dalhousie Square. The Calcutta Tramways Company, registered in London in 1880, formalized operations, with Viceroy Lord Ripon inaugurating the Sealdah-Armenian Ghat route on November 1 that year. Initially metre-gauge and horse-powered, short experiments with steam locomotives occurred in 1882 before full electrification.
Electrification Era
Electrification started in 1900, converting tracks to standard gauge, with Asia’s first electric tram running from Esplanade to Kidderpore on March 27, 1902. By 1943, the network connected Calcutta and Howrah via Howrah Bridge, expanding to areas like Tollygunge, Belgachia, and Behala between 1903-1908. This growth made trams the city’s “lifeline,” carrying passengers and goods while symbolizing colonial-era consolidation.
Cultural Legacy
Kolkata trams remain Asia’s oldest operating electric system and India’s sole surviving tram network under the Calcutta Tramways Company since 1880. Heritage efforts include the Smarnika Tram Museum at Esplanade Depot (featuring 1938 Tram No. 142) and art projects that rallied public support against closures. Despite challenges like route reductions, sites like Kalighat (oldest depot) and Shyambazar (northernmost terminus) preserve this iconic, eco-friendly transport.
